September sits in the middle of the peak stretch of hurricane season, and every boat owner in the Keys knows the drill: the decisions you make in calm weather are the ones that matter. This is a practical checklist for boat owners thinking about where their vessel and trailer sit for the next couple of months.

Decide early, not during a watch

The single most useful thing you can do is settle your plan before anything is in the forecast. Haul-out slots, yard space, and trailer parking all get tight fast once a system is named, and the last thing you want is to be making calls while you're also securing your house.

If your plan involves moving the boat, know now: where it goes, how it gets there, who's helping, and how long the whole thing takes.

A pre-season checklist

• Photograph everything — hull, engine, electronics, interior. Insurance conversations go dramatically better with dated photos.
• Check your policy — confirm what your coverage says about named storms, haul-out, and where the boat is kept. Some policies have specific requirements.
• Strip what's removable — electronics, canvas, cushions, safety gear, and anything loose. Canvas and cushions especially do not want to sit in a humid, closed cabin for months.
• Service before, not after — fluids, batteries, and any known issue.
• Trailer check — bearings, tires, lights, straps. Trailers that sit unused fail in exactly these places.
• Know your route — if you're trailering, US-1 is the only way out, and it is not a road you want to learn under pressure.

Where the removable gear goes

This is where a lot of people get stuck. You've stripped the canvas, cushions, electronics, and safety gear off the boat — and now it's all in the spare room or the back of the truck.

Marine electronics and canvas are exactly the kind of thing that benefits from a conditioned space. Salt air and humidity are already hard on them; sitting in a hot closed garage through September is harder. A small climate-controlled unit handles that gear well, and month-to-month means you take it for the season and let it go.
